Paddy Moloney, a founder of the Irish people band The Chieftains, passed away today. He was 83 years old. The information was announced by the Irish Standard Music Archive. No reason of fatality was given.
Moloney was a widely crucial component in the Irish people songs scene. For greater than half a century, Moloney led The Chieftains around the world, popularizing traditional Irish songs. The band also collaborated with many artists as well as teams from beyond the folk-music world, including Mick Jagger, Roger Daltrey, Emmylou Harris, and Luciano Pavarotti. Their last program was a very early St. Patrick’s Day party in Philly, Pa., in 2020, prior to the pandemic required them to terminate the rest of their “Irish Farewell” trip.
When it came to music, Moloney was self-taught. He told NPR in a 2002 meeting that his mom purchased him a tin whistle when he was 6 years of ages, and also learning that unlocked to other tools. “Since it provides you fantastic insight into instruments as well as formation of scales and that type of things,” he said.
“Yet likewise the various other charm of this little tin whistle is that when you get over the technicians of it, you can delve improvisation,” he added, “and you can begin to see the music and out it comes.”
